Women with lower muscle strength in certain hip and knee muscles, relative to their body weight, were more likely to have knee or hip osteoarthritis. The study also suggested resistance training should be considered alongside aerobic activity when supporting musculoskeletal health.
This does not mean that every woman needs to lose weight. Rather, it is a reminder that healthy body composition, muscle strength, movement, and joint health are related areas that deserve to be considered together.
Modern lifestyles and reduced muscle use
Technology and automation have significantly changed the way many women work. Office-based jobs, prolonged sitting, remote work, and reduced daily physical activity mean that muscles are often used less than in previous generations.
Women working in physically demanding occupations may experience greater muscle demands, but they may also face increased biomechanical stress and a higher risk of musculoskeletal injuries. The research highlights that women generally have lower upper-body and lower-extremity muscle mass compared with men, making muscle-strengthening exercises particularly important. Hence, it is important for women to maintain muscle strength and preserve muscle mass throughout adulthood.
How much activity is recommended?
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults include both aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activity. The guidelines recommend 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity, together with muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups on at least two days each week.
For someone who is currently inactive, the important message is not to suddenly do everything at once. Starting at a manageable level and building consistency can make movement more sustainable. The goal is to create a routine that fits real life.
Nutrition has a role in protecting physical function
Exercise is only one part of maintaining muscle health. Adequate nutrition also matters. Protein is an important nutrient for maintaining and building muscle, and including protein-containing foods across the day can be part of a balanced eating pattern.
A healthy diet is an important part of maintaining muscle strength and overall physical health. Eating well does not mean focusing on one particular food or following a strict diet. It is about giving your body a good variety of nutrients regulaarly.
Include a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, protein-rich foods, nuts and seeds, and dairy or suitable alternatives as part of your everyday meals. Protein is particularly important for maintaining and building muscle, so including protein-rich foods throughout the day can support muscle health. As a general guide, adults need around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day.
Exercise and nutrition work together. Regular physical activity helps keep muscles active and strong, while a balanced diet provides the nutrients your body needs to support them. The goal is not perfection, but consistent, nourishing choices that can become part of your everyday life.
Why women may find strength training difficult to start
Knowing that strength training is useful does not automatically make it easy to begin. Women can face practical and social barriers, including limited knowledge about resistance exercises, uncertainty about equipment, lack of supervision, time constraints, family responsibilities, work-life demands, and concerns about how they will be perceived.
A systematic review of women's experiences with strength training is highly important. Social support from friends and family was among the factors that could help women continue. This is where a supportive environment can make a difference. Strength training does not have to begin in a gym or with complicated equipment. A qualified professional can help a woman choose appropriate exercises and progress safely according to her needs and abilities.
What women can do
Include muscle-strengthening activity as part of your weekly routine, working toward the recommended frequency gradually if you are currently inactive.
Think beyond weight loss. Pay attention to strength, mobility, endurance, and how comfortably you manage everyday activities.
Include a variety of nutrient-dense foods and adequate protein as part of your overall eating pattern.
Choose exercises that train different major muscle groups rather than focusing on only one area.
If you are new to resistance exercise, have pain, an existing health condition, or are unsure how to exercise safely, seek guidance from an appropriately qualified healthcare or exercise professional.
Make consistency realistic. A routine you can continue is more useful than an ambitious plan that does not fit your life.
